We’re a rock climbing gym in San Luis Obispo, CA looking for a Programs Manager. But what we really need is someone who recognizes that stepping into our community has the power to change lives. While climbing experience is beneficial, it’s your leadership, adaptability, and commitment to our community that matter most. You should be familiar with gym operations, have a keen eye for safety, and possess a strong ability to learn and adapt. Most importantly, you should share our passion for climbing and community building.

Programs Mission:

The core mission of the Programs Department is to offer comprehensive training, fostering physical and mental growth, and enriching lives with skills that extend far beyond the climbing wall. 

You will be responsible for:

  • Overseeing and supporting youth team practices by communicating preset goals, given to them by the Director, for each team
  • Adapting and implementing engaging team curriculums and private lesson structures
  • Helping in coordinating and executing all aspects of youth programs and instruction, including hiring, training, and developing coaches, assistant coaches, camp counselors, and instructors
  • Assisting in the planning and execution for hosting USAC competitions at our gym locations
  • Helping oversee all travel for USAC competitions; including accommodation, transportation, and supplies
  • Maintaining a clean and organized gym environment, including setup and breakdown of equipment in relation to execution of programs.
  • Assisting in belay test, lead tests, and in teaching various climbing classes
  • Addressing and resolving all Program member and participant concerns
  • Performing basic sales and computer software operations, as needed
  • Actively seeking and implementing feedback to enhance program quality and community engagement
  • Monitoring and managing budgets to meet the needs of staff, gym, and the community
  • Overseeing and supporting staffing, scheduling, and planning of all camps
  • Overseeing, planning, and executing all climbing-related community events

You will be accountable for:

  • Scheduling and managing coaching and instruction staff to ensure adequate coverage for classes and practices
  • Auditing coaches and instructors to ensure adherence to safety policies and curriculum consistency
  • Maintaining inventory of climbing equipment and performing regular inspections
  • Maintaining up-to-date contact information for guardians and ensuring effective communication between coaches and families
  • Ensuring compliance with gym policies regarding certifications and safety
  • Representing the gym and modeling company values, fostering a supportive and inclusive community
  • Communicating during monthly meetings with Programs Director about operational needs, improvements, and personal goals
  • Attending monthly management meetings and communicating needs and goals to all department managers
  • Posting monthly instruction classes and offerings to Approach

You will be consulted for:

  • Policy development and leadership strategy
  • Program curriculum development and staffing needs
  • Community needs and construction projects
  • Space usage and facility enhancements
  • Program offerings

You will be informed about:

  • Policy and procedure updates
  • Safety protocols and training requirements
  • Competition schedules and departmental changes

Requirements:

  • Preferred 3 years of experience in coaching youth teams and a minimum of 3 years in climbing instruction
  • Preferred 2 year of experience in coaching USAC competitive teams
  • AMGA CWI certification (or higher) or willing to attain certification within 6 months of hiring, or the ability to demonstrate equivalent experience
  • CPR and First Aid certification or willing to attain certification within 6 months of hiring
  • 1 year of proven leadership experience
  • Proficient in climbing techniques, with the ability to climb V5/5.12 (preferred)
  • Comfortable engaging diverse populations and working in a dynamic environment
  • Strong communication skills with a genuine interest in working with youth of all all ages and their families
  • Ability to tie knots, move across uneven surfaces, and lift 50 pounds
  • Tech-savvy with applications like Word, Google Drive, Gmail, When I Work, and Asana
