We’re a rock climbing gym looking for a Recreational Teams Head Coach at our new Binghamton, NY location, but what we really want are people who recognize that stepping into our communities has the power to change lives. Coaches do not need to be peppy and upbeat 100% of the day, but they should exude a sense of warmth and be comfortable engaging diverse populations on our teams and on the floor. You will be the face of our gyms and be working in a team-centered, dynamic environment. 

Experience in climbing and coaching is a requirement. We are a gym founded by outdoor climbers and we believe in getting outside to climb just as much as we believe in the indoor gym community. How hard you climb is not a factor in your job, but you should have enough experience to speak the lingo, make safety calls, be familiar with gear and equipment, and be confident in your ability to learn and adapt. Above all else you need to have a strong desire to be part of The Pad community. 

Our Mission:

You will be responsible for:

  • Facilitating and leading group activities for a variety of ages and abilities, ranging between ages 6 and 14
  • Collaborating with coaches to create a structure for training and facilitating the youth teams with respect to each team’s training standards, and plans should include climbing technique instruction, strength development, group climbing sessions, and activities that develop the team, ensure follow-through
  • Keeping team practice sessions at the gym organized and productive
  • Cleaning and breakdown of any equipment or activities
  • Acting as a representative of the community and making a genuine effort to get to know and support members and fellow employees
  • Helping capture content that showcases the community and our day to day operations as determined by the needs of the business

You will be accountable for:

  • Maintaining safe practices in facility
  • Responding to emails from parents
  • Reaching out to people on the interest form and filling all spots on your team
  • Implementing instructional programs as hired, improving the course work and your teaching ability through feedback with youth families and your supervisor
  • Your availability for your scheduled practices. Should you need a last minute sub, you will contact your peers first, then your supervisor to ensure your responsibility is covered
  • Assisting the Climbing Director with hiring, training, terminating and most importantly inspiring and developing coaches, assistant coaches, and substitute coaches into world-class mentors and teachers
  • Maintaining strong communication with peers and participants through
    • Meeting with the youth program manager to discuss administrative issues, team events, program development, etc.
    • Communicating effectively with other coaches on the team to discuss climber development, activities, games and the progression of practices day-to-day
    • Keeping an up-to-date copy of parent and climber email addresses. 
    • Communicating with parents one-on-one if their climber is performing exceptionally, is having behavioral issues, or needs individual attention. 
    • Ensuring each team’s coach follows through with parents on the following topics: canceled practices, special team events and relevant administrative items.
  • Properly clocking in and out using When I work
  • Checking and replying to all communications via Email and Asana each time you work
  • Completing initial training board via Asana within 30 days of hire

You will be consulted for:

  • Policy development and leadership strategy
  • Staffing and community needs
  • Scheduling and curriculum changes

You will be informed about:

  • Policy and procedure updates
  • Program changes 

Requirements:

  • Genuine interest in other people’s experiences
  • Communicate clearly with peers and the community
  • Experience with speaking to or working in a dynamic environment
  • Confidence in standing up to strangers and those you care about when it comes to following rules and upholding the values of the company
  • Able to tie knots and move across uneven surfaces and stairways
  • Able to lift 50 pounds
  • Work as a member of a team, you will interact with other crew members as well as other department teams
  • Love of learning and a deep interest in improving things for those around you
  • Friendly, enthusiastic attitude, can exhibit warmth and empathy
  • Tech savvy enough to use and apply a wide variety of applications, including When I Work, Google Drive and the Google Suite, E-mail, Approach, and Asana
  • Actively seek new opportunities to improve self and the community at large
