We’re recruiting for the inaugural Route Setting Crew at The Pad Binghamton, opening in Vestal, NY this winter. The Pad’s route-setting crew is responsible for the creation of The Pad’s primary service. It is instrumental not only to the success of the gyms but also to the vitality of the local climbing community. We believe that quality setting motivates, inspires, and teaches our members to be better climbers and to grow as individuals and members of the community. Route Setters are responsible for helping to make The Pad a model of the industry by creating high-quality and innovative routes that will continually excite our members and visitors. These team members will be expected to ensure the safety of their coworkers and the entire gym community.

You will be responsible for:

  • Introducing new route climbing and bouldering problems on an ongoing regular and frequent schedule by organizing, participating, and managing setting days at the gym 
  • Observing and interacting with members of the community while on shift and not actively setting to assess the overall success of routes set for the day, asking for feedback when appropriate, and adjusting route-setting processes as needed
  • Leading by example with a high level of integrity, kindness, and communication
  • Becoming integrated into the community by spending weekly time with members, coworkers, and management outside of setting hours. 
  • Assisting with Safety Department checks if requested.
  • Helping ensure the safety of the gym is held to a high standard. This should be done by responding to incidents, spinning holds, or facility requests regarding flooring, walls, routes, and any gear within the gym in a quick and effective way.  

You will be accountable for:

  • Maintaining an appropriate spread of grades across varying terrain to inspire and challenge a wide range of climbers in an efficient manner, taking route density and general flow into consideration
  • Ensuring that the suite of climbing routes available at the gyms emphasize safety and satisfies the needs of the gym’s diverse climbing community
  • Follow appropriate risk management standards associated with route setting, both on the wall and in setting procedures
  • Helping to maintain climbing routes between scheduled setting days on an as-needed basis (including holds, tape, t-nuts, etc.)
  • Attending annual events hosted by the gym, especially when route setting is a centerpiece of the event
  • Attending relevant USAC setting clinics, working at height clinics, and/or other professional development courses related to route setting, gym safety, and the climbing gym industry as budgeting allows and management requests
  • Working collaboratively with all levels of management and attending staff meetings as determined by the needs of the business, stepping in across departments as needed
  • Helping capture content for social media that showcases the community and our day-to-day operations as determined by the needs of the business

You will be consulted for:

  • Policy development
  • Setting Department projects

You will be informed about:

  • Policy and procedure updates
  • Expansion updates
  • Changes specific to the facility
  • Ongoing training opportunities

Requirements:

  • Ability to communicate clearly with peers and the community
  • Experience with speaking to or working in a dynamic environment
  • Confidence in standing up to strangers and those you care about when it comes to following rules and upholding the values of the company
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Friendly, enthusiastic attitude, can exhibit warmth and empathy
  • Tech savvy enough to use and apply a wide variety of applications, including When I Work, Google Drive, Gmail, and Asana
  • Uphold company values and use the mission statement to guide decisions
